Sarah Knittle
Artist and IllustratorI’m a graduate of Wheaton College (Norton MA) where I majored in studio art. While at Wheaton I combined a study of fine art, traditional and digital, with a study of history and literature. I focused not only the social and historical significance of works, but also the techniques the artists used to create them. This includes the domestic arts; textiles, dyeing, soap making and the martial arts of chain-mail, and historical weaponry. For example, I am interested in Illuminated manuscripts and create reproductions using authentic techniques.
I create digital paintings by replicating traditional processes using modern tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator. I also work in traditional media: oil, watercolor, egg tempera, and pencil. I enjoy reading period documents for research and translating instructions for creating natural dyes, textile treatment, and creating historically accurate period dress through primary and secondary resources.
I love museums; the art, objects and tools of everyday life on exhibit and shared with others to enjoy and learn from are very important. I learn so much from museums and enjoy many hours immersed in the history and culture displayed. Preserving and caring for these objects combines the disciplines of science and art. I am extremely interested in learning more about these conservation techniques.
I am a fan of modern media and entertainment: Interactive media, digital games and board games. The artistry of these media is inspiring; they are a collaboration between many people creating an interactive work of art for other to participate in and contemplate. It’s a collaboration I wish to take part in.
